Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment which can help turn babies who are lying in a breech position.
Currently in Australia, the majority of women whose babies are in breech position face having a Caesarean section delivery.
Acupuncture involves the superficial insertion of very fine, single use sterile needles to specific reactive points on the body which encourage the baby into a more optimal, head down position.
The efficacy of the treatment is enhanced by a specialised therapy called ‘moxibustion’. This involves applying compressed Mugwort herb as a heat source to the acupuncture points.
Skilled practitioners have a high success rate in turning breech babies, enabling those clients to avoid a Caesarean section. Treatment should be started if your baby is in breech passed week 35.
Many babies turn after only one session, typically within 2 days of treatment. Sometimes up to 3 treatments are needed.
